Not every night in Phuket has to sound like Soi Bangla. The island’s west coast has quietly built one of Southeast Asia’s best beach club and rooftop scenes — pools, sunset DJ sets, cocktails and a dressier, more grown-up crowd. If your idea of a good night leans towards a sea breeze rather than neon, this is your side of Phuket.

The beach club strip

The big names cluster along the west coast, around Bang Tao, Surin and Kamala — a short drive north of Patong and a world away in feel. This is where you find the marquee venues: Catch Beach Club, Cafe del Mar and their neighbours, with pools opening straight onto the sand, rows of day beds, resident and visiting DJs, and sunsets that do half the work.

The vibe is resort-glamorous rather than raucous. People come dressed, cameras out, drinks slow and expensive. It is the polished counterpoint to the beer bars, and for a lot of visitors it is the best afternoon-into-evening Phuket offers.

Rooftop bars

Above the streets, Phuket has a growing set of rooftop bars and sky lounges — in Patong for the views over the bay, and scattered across the smarter hotels. They are the natural spot for a first drink of the night: sunset, a cocktail, a bit of altitude, before you decide whether to push on to the clubs or keep it mellow.

What it costs

This is the upscale end, and the prices say so. Entry is usually free, but the day beds and cabanas carry a minimum spend — reckon on 2,000 to 5,000 THB, and considerably more for a prime sunset lounger on a weekend. Cocktails land around 300 to 500 THB. It is a clear step up from the beer-bar budget, and worth it for the setting if that is the night you want.

Practical notes

  • Timing. Most open early-to-mid afternoon and peak at sunset. Book a day bed ahead for weekends and holidays.
  • Dress code. Resort-smart by day, smart-casual by night. Rooftops lean dressier — closed shoes and a collar are safe.
  • Getting there. The west-coast clubs are a taxi ride from Patong; agree the fare or use an app. Full logistics in our Patong safety guide.

The perfect date setting

Here is where this side of Phuket really earns its place: a beach club at sunset, or a rooftop bar over the bay, is one of the finest date settings on the island — calm, beautiful, and a million miles from the hustle of Bangla. It is exactly the kind of evening our companions love, and a lovely way to start a night before anything livelier.

The bottom line

Phuket’s beach clubs and rooftop bars are the island’s grown-up nightlife — sunsets, pools, DJs and a dress code, mostly along the Bang Tao–Surin–Kamala coast. Budget for the minimum spend, dress the part, and use it as the elegant opening act to your evening. This guide is part of our complete Phuket nightlife guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best beach clubs in Phuket?
The west coast holds the big names, clustered around Bang Tao, Surin and Kamala — venues like Catch Beach Club and Cafe del Mar are the best known. They combine pools, day beds, DJ sets and sunset views, and pull a dressier, more international crowd than the Patong bars.
How much does a beach club in Phuket cost?
Entry is often free, but day beds and cabanas carry a minimum spend, typically from around 2,000 to 5,000 THB and much higher for prime sunset loungers on weekends. Cocktails run 300 to 500 THB. It is a step up in price from the beer bars, in line with the setting.
What time do Phuket beach clubs open?
Most open early to mid afternoon and build towards a sunset peak, when the DJ sets and the crowd hit their stride. Some wind down in the evening while others push on into a proper night, so check the venue for the day you are going.
Is there a dress code for beach clubs and rooftop bars?
Beach clubs are resort-smart: stylish swimwear and a cover-up by day, smart-casual by night. Rooftop bars lean dressier, so closed shoes and a collared shirt are the safe call. Neither welcomes scruffy beachwear after dark.
Are beach clubs good for a date?
Very. Sunset, a pool, music and a relaxed dress code make beach clubs and rooftop bars one of the best date settings in Phuket, far more so than the busy Patong strip. They are ideal for an evening with a companion before, or instead of, the club scene.
